Writing circa 2010
Catching myself up on putting links to the stuff I’ve written since the year started. Nothing of tremendous note.
I reviewed the film “Nine.” Didn’t feel too positively about this one. Penelope Cruz’s Oscar nomination might be a bit of a stretch, but she is one of the bright spots among of a lot of duds.
Seoul microbrews! You typically can find about 5 kinds of domestic beer here and three of those taste the same, slightly more taste than Bud Light but not quite as satisfying as High Life. Anyway, there are a handful of bars around where they have their own brews, and some ain’t half bad. This bar reacquainted my taste buds with hops.
OK Go’s latest album. Didn’t know much about their music before this, don’t think I’ll be revisiting them anytime soon.
On the other hand, I got to review “London Calling.” I’m surprised about it, too, but the album’s 30th anniversary reissue came here in January and my editor asked me to review it, which is really hard to do in 200 words.
Finally, I saw “Whip It,” which came out here last week. I liked it more than I thought I would. We can cut to the chase and get to the Juno comparisons - it’s more earnest but manages to be a lot less cloying, and just ends up being a fun flick. Plus, Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat dance with each other to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” at one point, which is nice. This is a movie that my Mom is really going to like.
